MOVEMENT AS AN INTERFACE
The location of ITU Maçka Campus has the potential to set up significant open space public connections with the city. It’s in the middle of the city. It’s also next to Maçka Park, which is one of the most important green spaces in the area. And with the built cultural heritage it contains, it has the strength to transform the area and can create a substantial urban environment. Interpreting the architectural program and mass-space layout of proposal design aims to create high-graded indoor and outdoor living, learning, and working for both campus users and citizens.
One of the primary objectives of the proposal is to create the lacking usable qualified open space and strengthen the existing green space’s continuity at the same time.
The area between the historical building and the proposed building is planned as a cascaded pedestrian axis for the campus. This axis is in constant interaction with circulation mass at different levels. It turns into a public square on ground level and becomes a ground for campus social life.
The proposed building is a two-parted linear form. The northeast part contains classrooms and offices, the southwest part contains circulation. The southeast part is designed as fragmented mass composition to integrate with the urban fabric. Circulation mass provides vertical and horizontal movement, creates an interactive educational environment with coworking spaces and open offices at the same time. It also has connections on different levels with the campus and public space to increase the encountering.
