TRACE
Theodosius Harbour area contains the broad time traces of layers from the neolithic era to today’s world. Nevertheless, it is also one of the biggest transfer hubs of Istanbul.
We aim to present the space memory by revealing the continuity along these traces. With the help of the traces we reproduce for each layer of the transfer hub, we tend to create awareness about the history of space.
Proposed design for Theodosius Harbour Visitor Center creates a new trace for the area, strengthens the continuity along with the eras by hanging lightly to the threshold between the excavation site and Yenikapı Transfer Center. This hanging scaffold is planned as a new alternative route to the rapid connection between Yenikapı Square and the underground metro system. The placed boxes in the scaffold have various functions like an exhibition hall, infobox, archaeology library, etc. With this new route, passengers will be informed of the rich history of the area and they can observe the excavation site and the archaeological findings at the same time.
The ground level of the transfer center (Yenikapı Square) was designed as an open-air exhibition surface to present the history of space. We propose to carve the traces of shipwrecks from roman empire time (which is one of the biggest archaeological finds in the area) to the Yenikapı Square’s surface. On a rainy day, these carved surfaces collect water which is a reference to vanished sea layer as time passes by.
